9497 Miracles: My 26 Years of Sobriety

9497 Miracles: My 26 Years of Sobriety

August 25th will be my 26th re-birthday. I will have been sober 9,496 days on that date, each one one-day-at-a-time.

Every single one of these days is a miracle. I could be dead right now. Or living in a lower level of hell than I used to.

One of my brothers died from alcoholism. I held him as he drew his last breath at the youthful age of 45. I know where that path leads. It could have been me.

And it still could. Often I hear about famous (and not famous) people falling off the wagon after being clean for more than two decades. I respect the power the demon of addiction has.

Don't Be Consumed By Fear

Don't Be Consumed By Fear

The current morning ritual in my house goes something like this:

Me: (Reading the newspaper) “Oh my God…oh no....OH MY GOD!”

My Wife: “Trump?”

Me: “Trump.”

She doesn’t seem all too concerned.

“Freaking out doesn’t solve the problem,” she said.

As I read the paper, all of my political fears come bubbling up. Will one of his tweets crash the financial markets? Will he start a war with Russia? Will he start rounding up Mexicans and Muslims to put in concentration camps?

My mind does love to play out all of these scenarios just like an apocalyptic movie. And then I catch myself. The sun will still rise tomorrow. The birds will still be singing in the trees. There are still no zombies walking up the street.

Two Weeks Fasting in Thailand

Two Weeks Fasting in Thailand

I took the handle of the metal tablespoon and punched a hole in the bottom of the coconut and slid a straw in. I then sat down at the table on the front porch of my bungalow. The stray cat sprawled out on the table sleepily looked up at me and refused to move out of the way.

I then slowly savored the sweet taste of the fresh coconut water, which was my breakfast. It was my last day in Thailand. I was on Day 16 of my fast. In twenty four hours, I would back in my home in cold Kyoto where I would break this fast by eating 5 small organic cherry tomatoes. The first solid food in 17 days.

As I sipped on my breakfast, I reviewed all that had changed in a short amount time. My belly was gone and I had lost about 30 pounds. The stress I had been carrying around had also lifted. I felt clear-minded and energetic, although my physical power had been tuned down a couple of notches. I had a clearer of image of what I wanted in life and how to get there. And I didn’t feel hungry at all.
